Amy Ryan hunts for her daughter in grim true-crime trailer for Lost Girls
The first trailer for the upcoming Netflix mystery Lost Girls makes one thing clear: Do not mess with Amy Ryan.
Oscar-nominated documentarian Liz Garbus (What Happened, Miss Simone?, Showtime’s The Fourth Estate) makes the jump to scripted features as she helms the true-crime drama, which follows a distraught mother, Mari Gilbert (the Academy Award-nominated Ryan), as she relentlessly pressures law enforcement to find her missing daughter. In the process, her search inadvertently kicks up investigations into several old murder cases involving young female sex workers killed along Long Island’s South Shore.
Along the way, she clashes with shady detectives who, upon discovering multiple bodies unrelated to her daughter’s disappearance, attempt to bury their findings. But, Gilbert, who suspects a cover-up, isn’t about to go down without a fight.
“No one’s talking about our girls. And when they do, it’s ‘prostitute,’ ‘hooker,’ never ‘mother,’ ‘daughter,’ and it’s our job to make sure these girls are not forgotten,” she says. “I have been dismissed and ignored, but one thing I won’t be is silenced.”
Following the events that the film dramatizes, the real-life Mari Gilbert was found dead in the summer of 2016, with local news reporting that she was murdered by her other daughter.
